The Palms Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places shortly after being purchased by the Forbes family in 1984.
Built in 1925, the Palms Building is named for Francis Palms – a Belgian native who moved to Detroit in 1832 and made his fortune in real estate development. Palms’ descendents constructed the building at a time when Detroit’s population, and the popularity of the cinema, was booming.
The grand first-floor theater was originally called the State Theatre and functioned as one of Detroit’s grandest movie houses. In 2007 the theater was renamed the Fillmore Detroit, and now functions as a multi-use entertainment venue operated by Live Nation.
